First change the transmission filter and fluid and see if the problem goes away after a couple 1000 miles, if you have not already tried that.

I have a 1998 Audi A8 Quattro (4.2 motor) with the infamous hunting issue.
I finally got irritated enough to take it to the transmission shop, where
they told me the valve body needed to be replaced.  Does that actually fix
the problem?  I'd hate to spend the money just to be where I started.
