You have simply turned off the display. It's an option for night driving
with a black cabin.

On the same right hand stalk used to toggle through the displays, toggle the
thumb button on the under side. That little button has 2 modes of operation:
1) toggle (don't hold it in) to turn on/off the display in question
2) HOLD to zero the time/fuel-consumption/avg-speed indicators.

Marvelous car the A8. Trouble free if your mechanic doesn't mess things up.
I've had my 97 A8 for 190K miles, replaced a driveshaft, nothing else except
maintenance.
