I get to experience both the old and the new. My '91
coupe costs me little more than gas and insurance,
75% of other money I've spent on it in the last 5
years probably falls into the "upgrade" category.
Couldn't ask for a more reliable/ low cost car. And
on the rare occasions I have needed repairs, I've NOT
used a dealer, usually go to Brasil Auto down the
street from my home.
Not having bought a car in nearly 10 years, last year
I got a new 00S4, mainly because I could. Now at 23k
miles, it too has so far required nothing but gas,
oil, and insurance. I took it to the dealer for the
15k checkup, had to book it 6 weeks in advance. Other
than that, have done the oil changes myself, and will
probably skip using the dealer for future checkups.
Even though it is free, the hassles of pickup/ dropoff
don't make it worth it. If something serious does
break, well, I'll deal with it when it happens. Once
the warranty expires, the dealer won't even be
considered.
I think my experience with the old and the new is
quite typical, and the horror story that started this
thread is an outlier. At least I hope so!
