... you may want to try posting this on the main quattro list ... I'll bet
there'll be a lot more BTDT for you there. You didn't say, but I'll assume
that this noise happens only when the engine is running and the car is
driven ...
The two things I would recommend that you check are the transmission mount
to the subframe ... I think there is only one and it is on the left side of
the engine ... and the "torque mount" which is at the very front of the
engine where the belts are. What may have happened is that the torque mount
came loose and it is allowing the engine to move around more than it should
under acceleration. It is a bit of a longshot, but if you don't find the
tranny mount bad it would be another thing to check. You might also want to
try popping the hood and muscling the engine around to see if you can't make
it happen that way. I have found exhaust system interferences this way ...
Could there be a problem with the clutch cable itself? Look at the cable
inside the car as the pedal is depressed to see if it is frayed. That or
perhaps the pedal mechanism is worn ...
Good luck!

i got a thud noise hitting down twards the pedal area when i disengage the
clutch on my 1980 audi 4000, i can't find where its coming from, it sounds
like a peice of somethign heavy is hitting the chassis but i checked the
muffler pipe and it was pretty sturdy, not sure what else to check mabey the
motor mounts?
the transmission i have in there is not the original i had to have the body
modified for it to fit there, but that was a couple months ago, and i just
started getting the noise when i accidently (yes accidently) pop'd the
clutch pretty bad and had the wheels spinning hard enough to have smoke
follow and the front end swerve out of control, but it also only seems to
happen in first gear or second gear and i pull up the clutch.
if this makes sense to anyone, any idea what i should look at, i check the
clutch cable and there is only a little bit of free play which is normal,
and i checked the transmission also no problems visually.
ill check the motor mounts tomorrow almost sounds as if it could be them.
