... based on your report of the sound as "crackling" I would suspect that
the speakers were damaged as well. It is completely plausible that the
speakers could sound just fine at lower volume levels ... and boosted bass
will excite any resonances in broken cones, spiders and voice coils all the
more. Could the output power of your deck have exceeded the ratings of the
speakers you have?
The thing is that having the volume set over 50% might also be pushing the
output drivers of the deck into clipping ... which might create a sound you
could classify as "crackling." Perhaps the best way to determine which is
at fault would be to temporarily connect a known good speaker to one of the
outputs so that you can see if the crackling goes away or not. If that
isn't possible, you might want to try carefully damping a crackling speaker
with your fingers or a rag. If the noise goes away you can be pretty
certain the speakers are at fault, but if you can still hear the noise
(probably muffled) then it is the deck.

I have a set of blau speakers in my car 3way in the back 2 way in the front,
when i turn it up more then 50% of the max volume my speakers start to
crackle if too much bass is there and i need to turn the bass down, i asked
a coupe guys one at pacific stereo and one at radio shack, and they both
said my speakers are blow, but i think they are full of crap because if they
where blown they wouldn't sound as good as they do and the crackling
wouldn't stop if i turned down the bass, any ways the point im trying to get
at is can i add a amp or EQ to the system to fix this (the bass crackle when
up high) or do i need to get a woofer which i do not really want? i have a
blau santi monica cd player and a 10 disc blau changer also.
