40Wx4 driving 6x9 I think you said? That is not
really
that much power, head units with integrated amps
seldom
have enough power to really fill a car, depending on
your definition of "fill". My definition is loud
enough to be clear and overcome the windnoise at
freeway speed with windows down. Yes, that is loud,
I've never met a head unit amp that could do it.
So my guess is the amp is clipping... which can cause
speaker damage, though good ones should tolerate a bit
of it. As Jim suggests, finding the scratch to add
an external amp to drive at least the rears and
maybe a sub will help enormously.
If you feel up to doing this yourself, you can save a
bunch of money. Ask the list for help, I've gone
through it myself and I'm sure others here have as
well.
