Just as an FYI, and having lived in NL for years, California is HUGE.
There are a lot of areas without cell phone service, although most of the
state is covered.  Cingular probably has the best coverage here, followed
by ATT.  But be carefull with ATT.  They are in the process of migrating
from TDMA to GSM and GSM coverage is not as good.

Oh, and GSM roaming works fine, a Finish friend of mine comes here for
business all the time.  You can probably get a SIM card for your phone
with a local number and avoid buying one all together.

As others have said, it's easiest to just deal with it here rather than
from long distance.
