[ba] 97 12V V6 questions

hi all,

some quick questions regarding my wife's 97 V6 quattro
automatic.

1. the CEL light is on. she can get time off from work
to take it in, but would rather do it on the weekend.
any audi places in the bay area (we live in oakland)
that can run the codes on a weekend?

what is the usual charge? hopefully not more than $50.

is there a way to read the codes ourselves? my 1992
ford has an access port against the firewall. i have a
cheapie code reader for $30 that blinks the codes,
kind of like morse code ;-)

2. her a/c compressor might be dying. kick the a/c on,
you hear this whining noise. turn it off, noise goes
away. still blows cold. could it just be the clutch,
or we wouldn't have that sort of luck?

what's good a/c place to take the car. what's a fair
price to install a rebuilt compressor? i tried
autohaus in hayward for mine and was NOT pleased.
