Jurgen Shremp, CEO of Mercedes, once said that 70% of warranty issues
during 1998-2005 were due to electronics integration and Mercedes
quality rankings fell dramatically during that time. I think the
E-series was the only one without any issues (W210 chassis).

I would not get a Saab-aru. They are completely overpriced and if you
get into an accident, good luck finding body parts (BTDT with my XJR).
Better just get the Subaru equivalent, even if the interior is a little
chintzy.

The 2.5 GT Limited had an optional auto in 2005. In 06-07, it only came
as an auto. It would be my top choice, esp. as a wagon. AWD, 250hp,
pretty nice interior, what's not to like... It even looks good. OK,
25mpg, but it's pretty close to your target.
Also, I strongly recommend you look at the Mazda3 5-door. The interior
is quite good, they are pretty cheap & fun to drive. And 30+ mpg...
In the wagon category, Volvo had some pretty fast V70R's back in the
day. In particular the Y2k version was a real Q-ship, with 250hp and
AWD (but horrible mileage). The 2000-2007 model R's had 300hp and AWD...
The other car which is interesting is the Infiniti M45 2003-04.
Infiniti's in general are undervalued, esp. this model. Although it's
probably out of your mileage specs, although it's not bad at 24mpg.

As I said, no experience with them, but you're right, probably blows the
mileage goal.
BTW, I'm actually going the other direction. I'd rather buy something
cool and classic, like a BMW 535is or a Jaguar XJ Coupe, for my next
daily drive (which is currently the Focus).
Chris.
