Oil serves 2 purposes- lubrication, and cooling.
If not for the cooling aspect, no flow at all would
be necessary. We would pack the crank, lifters, turbo
bearings etc. with grease and be done with it. For
cooling you need flow, but a cold engine or turbo
doesn't need the level of cooling right after startup
that it will once warmed up.
And when it is warmed up, if 15W50 is not flowing as
well, we should see elevated temperatures. My oil
temps are always well below 250, just creeping to
that mark when pushed hard. Has anyone compared
engine temps using 5W30 vs. 15W50? Maybe I will
on the next oil change, it does raise my curiosity.
Back to the lubrication function of oil, I can tell
you from direct experience that with thinner oil,
I get lots of lifter rattle after a cold start on
my '91 5-cylinder. With 15W50, she purrs. So
clearly,
I get better lubrication with the thicker oil. If
the cooling function was so badly compromised, why are
there so many older Audis well north of 100k mi
running 15W50 without turbo or other failures?
And just what about your VR6 led to the conclusion
that
15W50 was "too thick"?
