No, I don't think you're wrong. I think your instincts are right here.
However, we do know that Audi redesigned the oil return lines from the
turbos in the '01'ish timeframe, and at the same time started recommending
0w oil for the later cars. This leads me to believe the system critically
depends on good oil flow, especially at startup.
So, yes, it's absolutely (IMHO) a good idea to warm up your car before
hitting the boost, as you suggest. What I'm most worried about, however, is
lack of oil flow at startup, which is a point where the wear risk is very
high. 0w oil definitely helps in this regard.
