No, you do not need an Audi phone, but using a different brand
requires a little more work.

I suggest you look on the Audiworld Tech section on Electronics.
There are a number of articles.  I was able to install a Nokia 6100.
It uses the built-in speaker and mic in the headliner, perfectly.
