I have heard that the infamous throttle boot problem is the root of
sputtering upon acceleration.
I had similar problems and my Audi dealer replaced the throttle boot under
warranty. It is a common problem on the S4.

In fact, several after mkt vendors have METAL replacements for the RUBBER S4
throttle boot. The OE rubber boot cracks and thus u get the hesitation on
start ups and under acceleration. I would not be surprised if your car is
NOT accelerating like an S4 should. The tech at the dealership actually
diagnosed the problem on a routine dealer test drive for another problem.

 Have your dealer check the throttle boot and I would not be surprised if
this is your problem too. My car was totally different after the boot was
replaced. This occurs frequently - so do not be surprised if these occurs
again. Hope this helps.
