[BiturboS4] Rumor(s) Behind The New S4

The only definitive way that I know if is if you have an M vs. an H box: M is
newer (2001.5). To tell, you have to take apart the ECU. PLEASE DON'T e-mail me
privately, as I'm sure others have the same questions or can more effectively
address the issues. You have to hit reply all to do this.

Back to the question. My deduction is this: the ECU was changed for the .5 and
the only way to tell that is to look at the ECU. I think the change was made
around February, 2001. Not 100% on that, but anything a few months later
definitely is a 2001.5 and anything built in '00 is definitely a 2001.0.

P.S. Hit reply all, PLEASE

<P>Phil, how do I tell if I have a 2001 or a 2001.5 build S4? Is there a
certain date after which it's considered a 2001.5?</P>

<DIV></DIV>>Per Carter's post, the turbos WERE doomed from
the beginning, as far as I can
<DIV></DIV>>tell. There are almost NO stories of failed
turbos from 2001.5 on (when they
<DIV></DIV>>increased the oil line size). Prior to that,
there were many. I think Audi
<DIV></DIV>>realized this and made the fix, but a small
mistake like that can cost the
<DIV></DIV>>company millions.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>Per jy's comment, the engine can more than
adequately handle the turbo
<DIV></DIV>>pressure, it's just the turbos themselves that
are being destroyed. In
<DIV></DIV>>reference to Walter's comment, consider the RS4,
which has a ton more pressure
<DIV></DIV>>(and engine stress). How many blown ENGINES has
anyone heard of? None here.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>I'm careful with my car (10-15 minute warm up
before I spool, cool down period,
<DIV></DIV>>don't run the car without a load on the engine)
and I have very little concern
<DIV></DIV>>about turbo failure, due to lack of blown turbos
as of late. That said, I will
<DIV></DIV>>be VERY gun shy about buying a first run car in
the future; it took Audi 1.5
<DIV></DIV>>years to figure out the problem and implement
changes in manufacturing to
<DIV></DIV>>remedy it.
