Oh, and we're really at a loss here with a 344hp (stock) car that weighs no
more than the previous model and has a stiffer body and better
tires/suspension (read sarcasm). Looks to me like Audi took a step forward.
It will be just harder (or more expensive to modify now, that's all).
Really, though, I haven't seen any *definitive* evidence that the modifying
crowd (moral or not) has been the cause of Audi ditching the twin turbo
design. That post the other day which gave a link to a survey was thoughtful
but not very significant or relevant. I mean, you couldn't draw a conclusion
as to whether modifying the cars actually caused the part failures.
Plus, look at all the 1.8T engines out there! I know SOOO many teenage kids
that tweak the crap out of that engine in their VWs and Audis (everything from
ECU upgrades to turbo upgrades and NOs). I read the 20v.turbo group and I
rarely hear of any problems.
VW/Audi has no plans to discontinue that engine that I know of. So, mods
aren't the driving force for change here. I think the 2.7T has more inherent
problems from the start and is much closer to it's limits in certain areas
that Audi needed to move to a N/A engine. Just my guess.
