I just got 2 tie rod ends from ECS tuning. About 90 bucks a piece I
believe. I think this is a common failure point on both the A4 and S4.

No, I didn't. I can't speak for the previous owner though and based on
the condition of the wheels I'd say he hit a few curbs. However the main
problem was ball joint and tie rod boot failure(the ball joints and tie
rod ends are not available separately). The boots are very flimsy
relative to even the boots on my old 81 Vw scirocco so I'd imagine all
the road grit spewed right at them due to their position right over the
wheel may have had quite a bit to do with the failure. As a side note
the parts guys I've talked to while getting replacements said that this
is a weak link in the whole A4/S4 series. Al

Control arms and tie rods? Did you smash into a few curbs? Never heard
that complaint before.
Still, I agree that the reliability of the S4 is not great.
