[Biturbos4] Boost Gauges

I have a question for those of you who have installed an aftermarket boost gauges in your car...

Was this a matter of splicing into existing wires in the car to ascertain boost levels electronically or did it involve installing a boost sensor in the intake system as well?

I ask because I am interested in possibly designing and building my own electronic boost gauge and it would be terrific if there was a wire in the harness that had a voltage proportional to the boost level already and I didn't have to do anything invasive in the motor to get the boost information I require.  I would think the stock system would already need this information for engine management and I may be able to translate that to a visual boost gauge output.
