Check for stored fault codes in the ECU with VAG-COM.  That should provide
a good clue as to what's happening.  On a '93, you won't have the ISO 9141
(OBD II) style diagnostic connector, but probably have the old 2x2 style
connector, but there is an adapter available from Ross-Tech (the maker
of VAG-COM).
