Aaron,
I don't have specifics related to S4's, but I've read some things
regarding 3 series (E36) BMW's.
As you mention, the length is what people question.
In the BMW's there is apparently a second hole that can be used to hold
the battery.
Others have fabricated some sort of bracket.
Also, I believe the location of the battery vent tube is different
compared to the stock battery.
Perhaps searching some BMW sites might give you more detailed
information/pictures.
Anyway, hopefully this helps a little.

I bought an Interstate replacement battery for my 01 $4... interstate's
website clearly indicates that I need an "MTP-91"... which when bought,
does NOT match the size of the stock battery.... it will fit depth wise,
but not lengthwise.  Anyone with any experience in this matter?  I'm a
big fan of those batteries, so I'd like to stay with them.  Thanks.
