A lot of people notice that the 1.8t and 2.7t (both with K03) seem to run out of steam at ~5500 rpm, well before the redline, this is due to the inefficiency of the smallish K03 unable to push anymore air at higher engine speed. The K04 on the other hand is designed to operate at higher engine speed, not to mention higher air flow capability, hence, it will continue to push air and maintain boost all the way to redline. Essentially the K04's operating range is shifted upward compared to the K03, and it is capable of higher flow.

The reason that people say K04 is more reliable is because it doesn't need to work as hard as the K03 to achieve the same level of boost, hence you don't push them to the limit as often. Throw a chip to the stock engine, the K03's are now operating at the upper limit of their efficiency range, hence they self destruct much easier.

They main reason why we haven't heard many turbo upgrade pass the K04 is due to the physical space inside the tight b5 engine bay. Also as I mentioned in my other post, both K03 and K04 have identical exterior dimensions, hence make it easy (relatively..) to swap for K04s. Any bigger turbos simply won't fit in the engine bay. However there are people and tuners out there working on other "bigger" turbo upgrades, but they definitely need some creative solution to find more space for them.
