You're right (of course :)), but I simply wanted to convey that they were
not in MP3 format and thus, MP3 decoding was neither necessary nor relevant.

Well, my initial post *did* say:
  a) when the fault occurred I tried a commercial (pressed) CD as
     well as another burned CDR, both with the same (erroneous) result
  b) since that occurrence though, no other discs have failed again
I know, picky, picky!  ;0)

But seriously, any idea about whether a cleaning would work?

And, just in case it's relevant, I'm referring to the single CD player in
the head unit (I have no changer).
