also seems related to being cold.  We'll see ...

I had that exact thing happened in my ex-A4 ('01.5).  It is worse when cold,
and it will only get worse over time.  My dealer replaced the entire
instrument cluster under warranty, there were no more or less rattles
afterwards.  The cluster is fairly easy to replace, they'll remove the
steering column plastic cover, and may have to remove the steering wheel and
the knee bolster, that's about it.
