what year is your S4? Y2K, or later?
If Y2K, the new (Audi upgraded) K03 turbos should be more durable than the old ones.
If post-Y2K, you will basically get a replacement of what came from the factory (those cars already had the upgraded K03s).
Bottom line, K04s are the way to go with these cars. I'm a charter member (in my eyes) of the BLOWN TURBO club. My Y2K S4 blew turbos @ 52k mi (stock -not chipped!) and i was out of warranty. Audi split the tab 50/50 with me (total cost $5400), they considered it GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE.
If my turbos blow again (i will finally chip the car in the spring), I will buy K04s on my own dime (I'm at 65k mi). I've seen the performance of an S4 with K04 turbos in person, it's like night & day from an S4 with stock K03s. I inadvertently (after i got my replacement K03s with the upgraded oil ports) raced an S4 with K04s, I was TOASTED!
Good luck with your new turbos.

Well, I got the bad news today, which confirmed my suspicions. One of the
turbos is spitting oil. The dealership will be replacing both, as well as
the timing chain cam cover gasket (?). Thank you Audi-Assured warranty!
I'm only at 65k, but I don't know just how the car was treated for the first
52k. I treat it well (frequent oil changes, careful warm up and cooldown),
lotta good it does me. Perhaps I will have to change my tune about the
reliability of these cars. And maybe I will look for off lease 4.2L S4 when
the warranty is up on this in about a year. Tis a shame.
Hopefully the dealer fix it right the first time.
Thanks for listening!
Brad
