Well Robby,
I can only speak for myself, but when Audi replaced the blown turbo(s) & intercooler(s) (metal shavings from the impeller ended up there according to the dealer) on my Y2K S4 (I was stock - just out of warranty @ 52k mi), the whole front end (bumpers/grill/radiator, etc.) was removed.
According to the dealer, this is what AUDI recommends when servicing turbos on a 2.7T engine. Also, the dealer estimated a 20-24 hr labor factor for engine removal, turbo (2) & intercooler (2) replacement, engine re-install. From my research, this bench time is normal. Even if ONE turbo, or intercooler fails, it's recommended that you replace BOTH.
So, I would recommend having an Audi savvy shop work on your turbos - if, or when they blow. If you are significantly out of warranty - replace the (weaksauce) stock K03 turbos with K04s (stronger) , since it will be on your dime anyway.

are blown turbos a common occurance with 2.7t engines?
such as can i expect to get 150k out of these turbos
(if not chipped or raced), or will they eventually
blow before 100k?
are these motors a pain to remove? or can my very
domestic car knowledgable friends figure it out with a
bentley and a cherry picker?
see ya,
Robby
