Though thermostats are generally cheap, on this motor they're located
behind the water pump, which itself is driven by the timing belt. As
others have noted, all of these components should be replaced when
changing the timing belt. Sadly, also as noted, this overhaul isn't
cheap...

I believe that the oil warning can indicate one of several things,
including inadequate pressure, low level or high oil temperature. Do you
recall what the oil temperature gauge was reading during this episode?
