I was told by my dealer that all parts replaced under warranty has to go back to Audi for failure analysis.  I personally think it's more for inventory purposes so that dealers can't scam Audi by saying that they've replaced parts for customers when they did not.

After reading yours and others responses, I think I did get a remanufactured MAF.  Since Audi offers reman MAF for sale at their parts counter, they probably require a core charge so that the old ones can be collectd and rebuilt.
