Hi Rich.
I would think your best first step is to look for
DTC's using VAGCOM or ProDiag .... but I'm guessing
you don't have either of those tools? Once of the
symptoms you refer to sounds like "limp mode" ...
Where are you located? Perhaps a "local to you"
lister could scan for codes and give you a place to
start.
You're right about the transient nature of some
problems. Even my dealer has stated that often they
will not address an issue until it happens twice.
