[Biturbos4] Rear Wheel Bearings Gone at 50K

OK, next issue ...
I've got a lot of howling coming from the back which has gotten
progressively worse. As I suspected, a mechanic confirmed that I need two
new rear wheel bearings.
My questions are:
1. I've only got 51 K miles (81,600 km) on the car ... isn't this a little
SOON to be needing this? (BTW, he confirmed that the front ones are "dead
quiet".)
2. I neither have the skill nor facility to be doing this myself, but the
mechanic that inspected it said he would need a special "spline tool" to get
at it and also said that an extra large allen key looked to be necessary as
well. Are there any special tools needed to do this job? I ask because I
would only go to my local dealer as a last resort, and wondered if any local
shops would have the special tools (if any are required).
3. Is there anything else I should be careful of in terms of getting a
non-Audi dealer to do this work?
Any and all advice appreciated!
Cheers,
David
