[Biturbos4] Grinding Sound from rear during slow speed stop

Lately I have been getting a strange grinding sound from the rear of 
the car as I come to a slow stop (5mph to 0).  It doesn't sound like 
brakes, and it seems to be coming from the rear differential, just 
judging by the sound.  What should I check first?  Should I check fluid 
and look for metal shavings inside the diff?  What fluid should I 
replace it with, if so?

Any help is appreciated...
