It also makes me wonder if you have a stock clutch.  The RS4 clutch feel
is pretty darn heavy compared to the stock S4 clutch.  The stock S4
clutch isn't light as a feather, but I've not found it to seem very
heavy either...

How many miles are on the car?  Do you know the maintenance history?
Just grabbing at straws here, but if the clutch had ever been replaced
it's possible it was upgraded, and that could lead to a stiffer pedal.

Those all sound like very complex mods, if not impossible.

I'm thinking you need something that exerts more force on the clutch
release arm (or 
requires less pedal force), which you would get with a larger slave
cylinder, no?  I just 
get tied up in knots trying to figure out whether that's correct or
backward!  For a given 
pedal force, you get a given hydraulic pressure, and for a given
hydraulic pressure you'd 
get more force on the release arm with a bigger slave piston, right?

If so, maybe an RS4 slave cylinder offers that option.  I don't know.

I finally went from a 97 A4 to a 01 S4, but since I'm old and beat up,
the firm clutch is 
causing me nerve problems in my left hip. I get in the A4, whose clutch
is light as a 
feather in comparison, and have no problem.

Here are the ideas I've heard:

aftermarket clutch (but wouldn't they be even firmer?)
lengthen clutch arm (i don't think possible)
use 8 cyl. master cylinder (will it fit?would that lighten it at the
peddle?)

I've spoken with a few mechanics and have heard all stock S4 clutches
are stiff (I would 
never notice it if my back wasn't screwed up), so I figure someone has
figured this one 
out.
