I do have a tiptronic. Is this a common problem? How hard to replace?
I've never heard of this. Could it be low on trans fluid causing this?
I just recently had a new torque convertor put in and it shifts fine but
maybe the fluid is low. I haven't checked it.

If you have a tiptronic its probably the air pump that you're hearing.
Manual's don't have them. It only runs for a short time after a cold
start.
