[Biturbos4] Startup Noise 2002 S4

Since it's a Tip - It's DEFINITELY your secondary air pump. Yes, it does eventually throw a CEL. How do I know? The EXACT same sound occurred on my Y2K S4 Tip and my mechanic traced it to the secondary air pump - it's part of the EVAP system on a Tip - S4s with manual transmissions don't have this system. I replaced the pump about 3 months ago - it cost me $475 for the pump and my mechanic charged me next to nothing for the install - he felt sorry for me. I have a stage 3 tip that visits his shop every other month for something!

As far as the argument with your wife - hate to say it - she's more RIGHT than WRONG when it comes to the S4 being a maintenance whore! Owning an S4 is like having a GREEDY mistress - you just spend the $$$ and hardly get any love (driving time) - because there is ALWAYS something that needs to be replaced. The 2.7T engine is rock solid - but the other components on the car are junk! I have too much invested in my S4 to just dump it.

Sounds like the resistor is the way to go. I remember that guy with the
supercharged A4 - I used to have an A4 and after seeing what he went
through I was glad I swapped into the S4 instead.

Good luck,
Al
