bulbs,
means the bulb is dying. One of mine started going into the pink stage
years ago. I replaced the bulb and it was fine.
Since then, I've gone to Ecodes and absolutely love them. I also
upgraded
my ballasts and bulbs to the 55W kit from DDM Tuning. I went with their
smallest digital ballast, and I was actually able to install it in the
stock
location in the headlight with just some Lexan and JB weld and some
screws.
Had a buddy do the electrical wiring, and I'm going to link the pictures
from Photobucket so you can check out my 2nd rate work. :P

As for price, the whole kit plus the extra wiring to hook it up to a D2S
bulb was under $100 shipped. You should be able to find stock bulbs on
Ebay
for around $60. Unless you're going directly to the stealership, I have
no
clue where your $300 cost came from.
However, it works quite well, and even though it's just a 55W ballast
overdriving a 35W bulb, I'm quite happy with it.
Oh, and everyone is absolutely correct about HID fade. In fact, if you
really, really pay attention and read the data and labels, I believe a
bulb
is fully burned in and therefore as bright as it is going to be at 1000
hours into its life. After that, it's downhill in our light output, and
it's a fairly exponential drop. According to lighting experts, HIDs are
losing light output from the very first time you turn them on.
