Thanks all for your advice; sorry to bring up a common thread yet again. I'm
going to get myself a higher-quality flare wrench, some "real" penetrating
oil and have another go...

vice grips is the way to go. Rock it forward and back until it comes free,
lots of tapping with a hammer will help and reduce the chances of twisting
