Failing/failed CV joint? Though I would have thought your mechanic
would have noticed a blown CV boot when removing/replacing the wheels
for balancing...

Both front outter CV joint boots on mine failed recently; fortunately
I caught things early enough that no damage was done and simply
replacing the boots sufficed.
