I am the same boat... 128K miles and still going strong. In this economy, I
won't get much in return, hard to sell, not worth squat to trade-in.
I have decided to double down. I figure if I put 3K fixing everything back
to new (new CV shafts and suspension, shocks, brakes, etc) around the car,
then I have a GREAT, FUN performance vehicle better than anything else on
the market under 40K (OK maybe a new Camaro, but hard to deal with a car
seat in that ;o)
So until I can buy an S5 Cabriolet (at which time the car seat won't be an
issue), I am sticking with the S4. Upgrading to an RS4 sounds like a really
good idea ;o)

I, myself, am at a crossroads. My '00 S4 just passed 10 years old and 136k
miles. Original turbos (still working great), and I've done all the standard
repairs: timing belt, rear wheel bearings, ABS module, suspension links, ad
nausea. Just finished the brakes all around this weekend, too.
In short, it's still a great car.
But after buying my wife a brand-new Jetta TDI, and remembering what it's
like to drive a new car, I'm getting the fever. Plus, I'm expecting to soon
be getting back into the realm of Round Two of all these repairs (at the
very least I'll need a t-belt within the next year-ish.) Add to that the
fact that the car isn't worth squat on the retail market, even as clean and
well-maintained as I've kept it.
On the other hand, it's a helluva car to drive, especially with the APR ECU
in it. And where else am I going to get a 300-hp AWD four-door power/leather
everything sedan for that kinda money? Couple to that the two big boxes that
have been sitting in my garage for the last two years containing a
brandy-new APR turbo-back exhaust system, and I have to wonder do I move
forward or punt? Drop in another several K in turbos and labor/effort and
keep it for a while or sell it?
Maybe I'll just have a beer.
