Thanks all for all the suggestions.

The messages I'm getting are:

  - 16" steelies: no chance. And they look like crap anyway.
  - 16" alloys: maybe. If I'm lucky.

I've not had any luck looking for 16" wheels online (the most promising 
site gave me a choice between £400 OEM wheels and some OZ racing ones 
which have the wrong offset and look a lot like they'll fold in half at 
the first sign of a pothole). *And* I'd have to declare it as a 
modification to the insurance company.

I don't see much point in getting a second set of 17" alloys.

So given all that, I'm inclined to just get the winter tyres put on my 
existing (stock) rims.
