Thanks for that, I was able to drop the glove compartment down, and
it looks like the damper strut is broken. The plunger/rod (which
attaches to the glove compartment lid) glides freely within the
strut cylinder without damping action, and there is a ring cap
that on the rod that looks like it came off the strut body, so the
rod slides out of the cylinder when extended. I was unable
to put the cap back on the strut. The strut itself is empty inside.
I think I need to replace the strut. According to the family album,
the part number is 8D1 880 324 A. I wonder if this piece is still
available. I found a couple of 8E1 880 324 A glove box struts for the
B6 playform. I wonder if they're compatible, they look very similar...
