And a funny follow up to this.

My wife's Passat had a mysterious leak as well - and when Ti told us what the source of his leak was I told myself to check the wifey's car.  Well I didn't get a chance.  But the car went in to the shop for new shocks and a few other misc things and guess where the mech said the leak was coming from?  Yep.  Coolant sensor. LOL.  Literally.

For the archives, the Passat V6 and the S4 coolant expansion tank have different part numbers, but both fit just fine.
