I posted this on AW, so some of you may have already seen this. For those who haven't, here it is!
Well I finally got it running today. Turns out that the distributor was slightly out of alignment. A couple hours work and she fired right up and settled in to a steady idle. I can't get too excited yet though, as the oil pressure warning light came on in the Autocheck almost immediately. The oil pressure gauge shows normal pressure, and I just filled the engine with clean oil. I'll have to do some trouble shooting on it. I let it run for about 2 minutes to see if maybe it takes a while for the oil to circulate through everything, the engine having been completely drained for the rebuild. But it didn't make a difference, the warning was still there. I even shut it down and restarted it a few times.
My other concern is with the actual oil. When I stopped the engine because of the oil warning, I checked the dipstick for the oil level (which I knew would be ok, because I just recently put it in), but the oil on the dipstick was frothy. When I looked closely, it was full of tiny air bubbles. Could this be because of trapped air throughout the oil system, like in the oil sump pick-up? Now here's the thing, the engine has been completely refreshed with all new seals and gaskets, including the head gasket, so I can't see how it could be coolant in the oil. It's also about -5 celcius here, so perhaps it is condensation. When I did fill the oil, I put in 4 litres (even though capacity is 4.5 with filter) and the dipstick showed it was actually slightly overfull. I figured this would change once the engine was started and the oil circulated. So do I have a reason to be worried, or is this thing kind of normal for a "brand new" engine?
The other thing is, I added an S4 windage tray, along with a second oil pan gasket. When I did this, I also left in the small stock plastic tray that is stock on the 3B. (the S4 tray fits around it) Could there now be too much restriction in the oil pan? Has anyone else just left the other tray in, or should it be removed?
thanks for reading!
