OK, we're getting somewhere.
Here is some basic info on the after run system, but that isn't your proble=
m=2E
http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/cooling.html#after
That's for the AAN/200q20v/10vt cars, but that's what you've swapped in...
http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/cooling.html#fan
describes the fan. Basically you have a series of resistors controlling fa=
n speeds.
Look down a bit for this:
"RADIATOR FAN RESISTOR PACK TESTS
If the 1st or 2nd speed fan is not coming on, you may want to check the lar=
ge resistor pack with aluminum heat sink mounted down below the front of th=
e radiator on the frame. This large resistor pack is used to drop the volta=
ge to the radiator fan motor to provide the 1st and 2nd speeds. Often times=
the 2nd speed fan will stop working due to this resistor pack getting burn=
ed up."
I don't know where the resistor pack is on the coupe. Assume it is the sam=
e; was all my Audis. You've probably got a short or wrong hook up.

BTDT
On every setting but ECON, my *HIGH* speed fan will run.
I cannot under any circumstances get the 1st speed fan to run.

Use your coupe bentley to troubleshoot the climate control, section D8, st=
arts on D8-140 (D8 is right after group 74 if you can't find it). Low spe=
ed should work with climate control in any setting except ECON, while outs=
ide temp is above around 40 degrees, and key to ON, whether engine running=
or not.

Tried that LONG ago.
Doesn't work.
My bigger problem (which is most likely related) is that the 1st speed fan=
does not come on at all.
I'm going to tear into it this weekend.

After run circuit is pretty easy to troubleshoot on all the turbo Audis.
First step: engine off, look at the coolant rail on the radiator side of =
the head. There are two temperature sensors on it; the smaller 2 pin unit=
is used for afterrun.
Connect the two wires together (don't let them short to ground) and you'll=
have the low-speed fan and pump run. It can be hard to tell if the after=
run pump is working; it should vibrate, but that doesn't always mean cool=
ant is flowing, as the impeller may be frozen.

Hmmm, it can be made to work. I have a 4-row Al
radiator (from 2B, bought it years ago when the
stocker broke, before they raised their prices) and
no AC. The thermoswitch on the rad. does it's thing
switching the fan on and off, and presumeably the
thermostat is in good working order. I have to really
work it to get the oil temp guage above 100C (stock
200tq/3B oil cooler) and the VAG-COM shows group 000
engine temps right around 200F as it should be.
The only issue I have is that I have yet to hear
the after-run fan/ pump kick in. I understand that
is not unusual for 3B/ AAN cars, but I still plan to
dig into it at some point.
Net I think the only components that could cause your
trouble are the thermoswitch and T-stat. I would be
surprised if the stock radiator is really that
defficient.
