I do think there is something wrong with your car, but I think the turbo is
the last thing you should check. If it worked before, it will still work.
They are sturdy little critters and the behavior that you described wrt the
turbo spinning freely is normal. Every stock Audi turbo I have ever looked
at has behaved that way. My brand-new RS2 did the same thing. The only
turbos that I have seen spin freely were rebuilt or modified turbos. YMMV,
but I call that normal.
Instead, I would start regular troubleshooting procedures. Pull any codes
obviously, but then start going through Scott's checklist here:
