[Es2] Sport Quattro problem

No codes possible, these cars were never produced with that capability.

I need to check the cap but that would not be the sort of problem that is so
intermittent whereas your pump relay question is just such a thing that
could overheat especially if the battery is dying (slowly).  There is no
indication of this,  Its is kept on a trickle charge and the engine starts
first time every time from cold, and runs very well.  This problem only
happens when the engine has been run for some time, in hot and cold weather,
with or without electrical load.

Your point about the smell of gas has me worried too.  Because it does seem
to knock out the fuel starvation theory of a pump or relay problem.

Probably the first thing to do without testing each part is to replace the
plugs and plug wires.

I'm assuming then you've checekd the other obvious things like coil output,
sparkplug wires, distributor cap and rotor, ISV, fuel pump relay. It sounds
like lack of spark to one or more cylinders rather than fuel supply sinch
you smell unburned fuel. Any chance of getting a spare ECU to hook up? Does
the car have the ability to output engine fault codes?
