[audi20v] Fwd: Re: [Es2] Upper strut mounts

Thanks for the heads up. I regret that as other auto interests have
crowded out my focus on the eS2 so that I am out of touch on
developments.  Sad!  
That said, I wonder what the effect is of a solid bearing on other wear
items.  Racecars use solid mounts for everything: my 911 engine is
bolted directly to the unibody, all the suspension mounts are steel
spherical bearings or derlin.  On a racecar you don't mind the extra
vibration, but the extra strain on the production-based chassis is very
apparent.  E.g, without beefy welded gussets on the rear ARB mounts,
they will rip right off the chassis under cornering loads.  Also
_everything_ unscrews itself requiring safety wire, loktite, and
periodic checks.  My rollcage is tabbed to the B pillar, and the weld
recently ripped under the strain of the twisting shell.  

I'm also reminded of the thread of five or six years ago regarding rear
A-arm failure in urS4s with delrin bushings.  The theory was that the
manufacturing tolerances around the relationship of the a-arm to it's
mount were sufficiently sloppy that when you forced the arm to move in a
described plane (by replacing rubber with inflexible derlin/urathane)
there was enough metal fatigue to cause the arm to fail.  

Now, I can't see where the loads created by a solid upper strut mount
would cause any kind of catastrophic failure.  But all that force that
was previously absorbed by (and apparently destroying) the rubber
bearing, now has to go somewhere else.  I'm curious to hear from those
who have tried it (I guess I'll go lurk on the audiworld thread)
regarding trade-offs...
