I've always been able to attach the engine hoist to the engine before sliding it off the tranny, so there is _something_ fairly obvious on the block back by the bell-housing. At least, I think!
I do know I've always had to be careful the chain I used clears the distributor...so that might give you a bit of geography and where to look
