Bernie,

The calipers are fixed monoblocks that were purchased used but in like-new 
condition. I haven't had them overhauled but all pistons move freely and the 
dust boots are in good shape. I've kept the stock hydraulic assist. I'm 
going to try a different set of pads to see if that solves the initial bite 
problem. By the way, anyone have a good source for Ferodo DS2500 pads?

Ben, are the 996s fixed or sliding calipers, i.e. on guide pins?
What’s the caliper overhaul history? Is the power assist hydraulic,
ala 20Vs, or vacuum powered? Must be hydraulic as you mentioned the
accumulator. I doubt that there is anything wrong with the MC if you
don’t have a sinking pedal when brakes are applied, and your
hydraulic system is clean.
