I am selling an APR (www.goapr.com) Stage 1 chip with ECU for a 2001.5 A4 1.8T. This is an absolute necessity for your 1.8T motor, especially if you drive with the A/C on all the time in hot, humid air like I do.
It's a plug-n-play replacement for a FWD Tip, or you can borrow a VAG-COM tool and recode it. Just swap it with your current ECU and your ho-hum 170hp becomes 214hp/247lb-ft! Includes EMCS so you can toggle from stock to chipped mode using the cruise control stalk. Additional programs (like race 101 octane) can be added from APR. Undetectable to diagnostic software, though I always left it in chipped mode anyway when I took it to the dealer. Retail cost was $499 (chip) + $149 (2 programs) + $680 (ECU) = $1328.
NOTE: As far as I know, the CH box was never used in anything except the 2001.5 A4 with the 1.8T, and this ECU will only work in that vehicle! There are tons of articles on how to determine if you have an '01 or a .5, but the best bet is look at the ECU. It'll only take you 5 minutes to pull the cover, and it'll save you a lot of money.
Here are the instructions to swap the ECU: http://www.audiworld.com/tech/eng4.shtml
If you have to recode for Quattro or manual transmission, just pull the software code from your current ECU before you remove it, then enter this number in the new. Here are the instructions from Ross Tech's online instruction manual:
