The good: Owned by a professional mechanic for the past 15 years, my wife's DD. I took care of the car and repaired systems as they aged (see above) because I didn't want her to have problems w/ the car. It has failed to start twice in 15 years, once it was a stone dead battery, other time it was a bad FP relay. The car runs & drives well, suspension is very tight, bordering on uncomfortable w/ the H&R springs, UrQ strut mounts and new 205/60HR15 tires. But the car goes where it's pointed and stops well. Engine is stock except for gutted cat, slightly richened mixture, advanced timing, disable hot air intake. Doesn't use or leak oil in any noticeable quantity. There is an occasional drip on the garage floor. Ditto the transaxle & diff, occasional drip. Gets 25-26MPG on highway, low 20's in town. AC has been retrofitted correctly w/ a new rotary compressor for 134, cools good, not great, but it gets the job done and is quiet & reliable. Heater works great, same for the
heated seats. Headlights upgraded from 45/55W stock to 55/100W hella bulbs. Wiring upgraded to match, separate relays & fused for hi, low, aux lights. Glass lenses & reflectors still in good shape.
The bad:
Body and original paint is imperfect. There is a pretty good ding on the driver's rear corner & wheelwell lip where some jerk sideswiped the car while parked on the street. Paint is knocked off and rust is starting there. Rusted front lip on hood. Otherwise, body is solid & straight. Rear door handles are both inop. 4 new door strikers & 2 new rear handles included.
Parking brake is inop, the pull rod under floor broke a few months ago. New one is still available from Impex.
One rear window just stopped working, but it does work if the door is opened a little, indicating wire is broken in doorhinge area. Other 3 windows are fine.
Sunroof worked fine for 20 years, then made a crunchy/skipping sound when closing last time. I helped it shut by hand and have not used/tried it since.
Car is not perfect, but it still has a lot of life left in it. A new VW purchase forces sale of car. Needs nothing to be a reliable daily driver. Come look at it and drive home, before the snow flies.
