This car has been well maintained and well loved in its nearly 16 years of use. It was given to my wife by her parents following her first year of college and she has owned it ever since. The car has been very good to us and has NEVER left us stranded. It has lived in Virginia, Colorado, and California.
The good:
-The car has had only ONE OWNER. ALL maintenance records have been kept. For about the past seven years, the car has been used primarily for driving to and from work, with occasional trips to the Bay Area and Tahoe.
-The car has had NO MAJOR ACCIDENTS. Its only collision occurred in New Orleans in 1991 when some bumpkin rear-ended us, causing only cosmetic damage to the bumper, which was repaired immediately.
-The 10-valve, 5-cylinder inline engine is a classic and still performs very smoothly, with no hint of any problems. It is especially strong when downshifting at higher speeds (to pass, etc.).
-The Quattro system provides outstanding road-grip, especially in the snow. I have never driven a better snow car. It does not require chains.
-The body of the car is VERY smooth, with only a very minor dent on the driver-side rear quarter panel (easily repaired).
-All power windows function perfectly. The sunroof is opened by a hand-crank, so theres no worry of ever having to replace its motor.
The other stuff:
-A/C does not blow cold air. I believe that the system simply needs to be charged. When I press the A/C button, there is a noticeable drag on engine power, which leads me to believe that the unit is still functioning.
-Driver-side fog lamp and housing are missing as a result of a collision with a raccoon. This should be easy to find at a salvage yard or on the Web.
-The clear coat is noticeably deteriorating in several places, especially on the hood and roof.
-Rear defogger switch appears to be broken and probably needs to be replaced. I have checked the fuse and it seems to be intact. Again, a used defogger switch should be easily obtained.
-The EGR or check engine light has turned on sporadically for nearly the entire life of the car. We have had it checked by Audi dealerships is Colorado, Virginia, the Bay Area, and Sacramento, and no one has ever been able to figure out why. A few years ago we stopped worrying about it and have had no engine performance problems.
-Youll want to replace the tires pretty soon.
-The Quattro tag has come off of the rear but I still have it. I just havent taken the time to stick it back on
