I have a pair of very nice headlight ignitors for the B5 A4 and S4 models with the Valeo headlights.  I have tested these in my 2001 S4 Avant and guarantee that they work great.  Included is a bulb with each ignitor.  I have two of these.  Pricing is each!  I believe they retail for well over $600 each from the Audi "Stealer" and of course the bulbs are spendy as well.  This will solve your problem if you are not sure if its the bulb or the ignitor.  These are in great shape and have NO burn or melting in the bulb holder area which is common. FULLY TESTED....
